An Australian tourist died yesterday after being attacked by a shark in waters off New Caledonia in the South Pacific.
A 59-year-old man was swimming when a shark attacked him around 4 PM on Sunday near Château-Royal beach in Nouméa, New Caledonia a French territory.
Two people rescued the man on a jet-ski and CPR was performed, but he did not survive his injuries.
In response the local City Council said in a statement,
Swimming and nautical activities are closed in a 300-meter coastal band until further notice.”
A shark “culling’ was reportedly activated immediately after the attack.

This was the second attack in less than a month in the same location. According to the Global Shark Attack File, in late January, a 49-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries after being attacked by a bull shark while swimming at the same beach.
That beach, and nearby beaches, were closed since that attack and only reopened just last Thursday.
We saw the movie. The City Council and the mayor are the villains here, not the shark. They still want the tourists to come.
