Shortly after production began on Suicide Squad in Toronto last year, director David Ayer shared this photo of Jared Leto as The Joker. The Oscar-winning actor looked deranged, which showcases a number of intricate tattoos. As production continued, it’s been revealed that the actor stayed in character the entire time. Leto himself hasn’t said much about his iconic role, his co-star, Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller, offered some insight in Vanity Fair,
“…he did some bad things, Jared Leto did. He gave some really horrific gifts. He had a henchman who would come into the rehearsal room, and the henchman came in with a dead pig, and plopped it on the table, and then he walked out. That was our introduction to Jared Leto. Now I’m terrified as a person thinking ‘Is he crazy?’ but the second part was ‘Oh shit! I got to have my stuff together.’ You talk about commitment and then he sends Margot Robbie a black rat. It was still alive in a box. She screamed, and then she kept it.“
Leto also sent a box of bullets and a dead hog to Will Smith, along with the video of Jared Leto in character as The Joker. Scott Eastwood has said that he didn’t want to approach the actor during production, because he didn’t want to “mess” with his method acting style. (i.e., “That dude is nuts!”)
Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) added that she was actually even more scared of seeing Jared WITHOUT his makeup on, she got so used to his Joker persona. Of course, this role has been played to the hilt before, first by Caesar Romero in the original Batman series in the 60s, then Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton‘s reimagining and in 2008, Heath Ledger‘s over-the-top-of-the-top performance in The Dark Knight.
The all-star cast includes Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), and Jay Hernandez (El Diablo). Ray Olubowale also appears in the movie, but his character hasn’t been revealed. The official length trailer as well as the first one that appeared at ComicCon this summer are below with the whole gang in action are below. 100 million views and counting before it hits theaters in August.
