Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late James Gandolfini, will play a young Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark, The Sopranos prequel.
Written by The Sopranos creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner, it’s is set amid the riots of 60s Newark, New Jersey when the city’s black and Italian residents clashed.
James Gandolfini played the role of Tony Soprano in the HBO series from ’99 to 2007. The three-time Emmy winner died in 2013 at 51.
Son Michael has appeared in last year’s Ocean’s 8 and The Deuce on HBO.
Gandolfini told Deadline,
“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”
