When you think of Udo Kier‘s body of work – the genuinely brilliant, the utterly camp, the unwatchable, the schtick-y – Flesh for Frankenstein, Blood for Dracula, The Story of O, Suspiria, My Own Private Idaho, Dancer In the Dark, Scooby Doo! Mystery Inc – it’s hard to believe the German icon has had relatively few lead roles to his name. “He really liked being able to develop a character and give it an arc, and not just to have to make that impact in five minutes,” says Swan Song writer-director Todd Stephens. “I think the film finally shows what Udo can truly do.”
In the upcoming movie, Kier plays a long-retired hairdresser named Pat Pitsenbarger who walks across the town of Sandusky, Ohio, to attend to the corpse of a former client (Dynasty star Linda Evans!!!), regaining his mojo along the way.
The cast of Swan Song also includes Jennifer Coolidge, who plays an old rival of Kier’s character, and the always delicious Michael Urie.
Swan Song is released in theaters Aug. 6 and On Demand Aug. 13.
