Here’s the “Venom” Trailer Starring Tom Hardy Covered in Sexy Black Goo You Need to See

By James St. James on April 24, 2018 3:06 pm

It’s the second full trailer for Venom, and unlike the first one, we actually get to see the title character of the alien symbiote in this one. And it does not disappoint. Black and gooey with a big monster mouth and shop monster teeth. It’s pretty terrifying,. The movie stars Tom Hardy looking a bit ragged but still oh-so-humpable, doing a weird, squeaky-voiced American accent (that’s actually sort of Brando-esque now that I think about it. Which is an odd choice).

Geek.com has a few qualms with the trailer, as well:

What is even going on here? So Eddie Brock (Hardy) is a reporter who lives in San Francisco before becoming Venom. His origin is now he breaks into an evil biotech company’s headquarters while chasing a story, and… somehow gets covered in bad CGI alien goo. That’s what Venom is now. Rubbery tentacles and a throat-damaging whisper. And look. I love Tom Hardy. He’s a great actor. But watching one of the most physically imposing men in Hollywood put on his meek reporter voice is the funniest damn thing I’ve ever seen. What is that accent? He might have been better off talking in his Bane voice for the entire movie. Hey, he was born in the shadows, and by the looks of that monster, that’s where he should have stayed.

AND WHAT THE HELL IS A SYM-BYE-OTE? Is it supposed to be clever? There’s a real actual word for the kind of creature Venom is, and it’s symbiote. Sym-BEE-ote. How did this movie get all the way through production without one person saying, “Hey, you realize we all sound really stupid, right?” It may sound like a nitpick, but it’s exactly the kind of stubborn mispronunciation that makes my eye twitch more with each subsequent instance.

The movie also stars eye candy Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams.

And for those of you still wondering how there can be a Venom origin movie without black-suited Spider-Man (via GameSpot):

Athough Spider-Man features in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony still owns the movie rights to the character. There was initially some confusion about whether Venom will be part of the MCU, and whether Spider-Man could appear in any of the spin-offs. Both Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Spidey actor Tom Holland have stated that the two universes are entirely separate. However, last year, former Sony boss and Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal suggested otherwise, before subsequently switching to Feige’s position.
