Paging Captain Obvious…
After 81 years, DC Comics is finally allowing one of Batman’s Robins to spread their wings, sexually speaking, and come out as bisexual.
Yes, young Tim Drake (the third Robin, and MY personal favorite) realized he’s bi in the newly released issue of Batman: Urban Legends #6.
In it, Tim/Robin is fighting alongside his friend Bernard Dowd when he starts to grasp the big picture.
“Ever have a lightbulb moment?” Tim wonders in the panel. “Like something out in the ether has been taunting you, teasing you. Like you know you’re supposed to be on the same page as your brain but not everything made sense. People keep asking me what I want. But I couldn’t grasp it. Whatever it was. It always felt just out of reach. Until now. Until right now.”
At the end of the issue, Tim approaches Bernard on his porch.
“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about that night and I don’t know what it meant to me,” Tim says. “But I’d like to find out.” Which prompts Bernard to reply: “I was hoping you would. Tim Drake… do you want to go on a date with me?” Then Tim replies: “Yeah … yeah. I think I want that.”
And hurray for that!
Nerdist does a deep dive into the history of the Robin characters and their perceived sexuality. It’s pretty fascinating stuff.
In the 1950s, the entire comic industry almost collapsed when a psychiatrist named Frederic Wortham published a book called Seduction of the Innocent, in which he claimed comic books were perverting the minds of young readers. He specifically called out Batman and Robin saying it was “wish dream of two homosexuals living together.” HA!
DC quickly reacted by giving Batman a girlfriend (Batwoman) and reeeeeeally butching up Dick Grayson/Robin, making him a big-time ladies man (with girlfriends Barbara Gordon, Starfire, Huntress, and many, many, many others).
Tim Drake’s Robin, however, has always sliiiiiiiiiiightly given off LGBTQ vibes. Sure, he’s dated Stephanie Brown/Spoiler on-and-off for about 25 years, but his biggest relationship was always his bromance with Superboy/Conner Kent. It’s the stuff of legend, with gay fanboys reading waaaaay too much into their every interaction.
So all of this is big, big news and we can’t wait to see where it’s going.
The saga continues in next issue of Batman: Urban Legends, due out in December.
Well, it's officially – Tim Drake/Robin is CANON BISEXUAL! 🤯👏👍— WriterGuyKai (Kai)✒ (@WriterGuyKai1) August 10, 2021
