Call it toot beer. A new beverage, Cocaine, is being marketed to give a person a “high” coupled with a tingly feeling of euphoria within five minutes of drinking it. Roughly 15 minutes after the tingle, the drinker experiences a buzz of energy that supposedly will last five to six hours. The company, Redux Beverages, claims the product is 350 percent stronger than Red Bull – with no “sugar crash.” James Kirby, who invented the drink, admits that a “throat-numbing” ingredient has been added to simulate the drug it’s named after, but won’t say what it is. “We’re getting a phenomenal response,” he says of the drink’s success with the high school and young adult demographic. “It’s an energy drink, and it’s a fun name,” he says. He’s serious: “When a person sees the name of the drink, some psychological effect happens and the person is already experiencing the energy buzz before they even open the can,” he says. “As soon as people look at [it], they smile.” We’ll try it, of course, and compare it with the real thing, if memory serves us, but we’re still getting flashbacks from Jolt.
