An anonymous hactivist, known only as WauchulaGhost, targeted more than 250 jihadist social media accounts and following the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, replaced the pro-ISIS imagery with pro-LGBTQ messages and links to gay porn.
His hijacking of the accounts have led to death threats. He told CNN,
“I get beheading images… death threats. ‘We’re going to kill you’ and that’s good because if they are focusing on me they are not doing anything else. We started to take over their accounts with porn and gay pride images basically just to troll them. We thought that putting the naked images would offend them.
Sometimes you have to stand up and make a change for the good.
ISIS have been spreading and praising the attack, so I thought I would defend those that were lost. The taking of innocent lives will not be tolerated. One thing I do want to say is we aren’t using graphic porn and our purpose is not to offend Muslims.
Our actions are directed at Jihadist extremists. Many of our own [group of hackers] are Muslim and we respect all religions that do not take innocent lives.”
Twitter has shut down more than 125,000 accounts promoting extremism in the past year.
