Art Basel Miami Beach has morphed into a mega monster, spawning over 70 shadow shows this year. It’s now become the most important cultural event in North America, with its shows spotlighting the best world-class contemporary art. I was dazzled, inspired, and many of the works changed the way I see the world – as the best art should always do.
Along with the main show at the MIami Beach Convention Center, ABMB stages constant off-site seminars, salutes, opulent parties, concerts, and glam bars that whirl one to the heights of sensual overload. It seems that we floated on a cloud of the Verve d’ Clicout that was poured freely during the six official days of the event. And this year there were so many more pre- and after parties.
And then there were the shadow shows, all hot to hoover up the leftovers from wealthy international collectors who come to Miami buy up cheap American art with their fat Euros. The best of these shows was Scope and Los Angeles art impresario Steven Cohen’s first foray into staging a major contemporary international photography show, Photo Miami.
I can hardly wait for next year.
