Too bad they cancelled the OJ book and show. I planned to buy the book (but not read it) and I planned to watch the show (but to TiVo it first and watch it later – ‘cos somehow that seemed less bad). No, I didn’t read her letter (we don’t read here in LA), but I don’t need to read the letter to know that:
a) She’s crazy. She has no sense of boundaries of what’s appropriate. She tells everyone she meets that her son has an enormous penis (maybe he does).
b) She’s a hypocrite. She pretends it’s about one thing when it’s really about another.
c) She’s completely self serving. It’s all about her (just read her letter).
In short, Judith Regan is 100% American. And that’s why everyone hates her, because we are filled with self-hate. And deservedly so. It’s extremely telling that she has been able to wring a confession out of OJ, unlike the entire justice system. OK, so it’s a trick (If I Did It) , and maybe it’s tawdry (bazillions of dollars paid to OJ), but the fact that that’s the only way to get anyone to tell the truth is one more reflection of who and where we are.
And quashing the book and the show only reinforces that point. Now, in addition to being rewarded for his crimes, we are letting him get away with it – again!
There’s a book (no, I haven’t read it) called Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, and this episode should be a chapter in that, along with other less inconvenient truths like global warming and the Iraq war.
