200+ protestors in Huntington Beach, California, gathered in the latest demonstration in the US against stay-at-home orders to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections and deaths.
The march happened Friday afternoon in the downtown area of Huntington Beach, about 40 miles southeast of LA. The “March for Freedom” was described as protest for
“freedom, liberty and reopening the California economy.”
Protestors held signs and chanted,
“Quarantine the sick, not the healthy! & “Open Cali now.”
In the 24 hours ending at 8 p.m. Eastern time Thursday, 4,591 people were reported to have died from COVID-19, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. The prior record was 2,569 on Wednesday. (For coronavirus information on your area, go here and type in your zip code.)
There were, of course, “Trump 2020” banners and signs. Trump told ABC News’ Chief White House Correspondent Jon Karl on Thursday,
“It’s been a tough process for people…
You know, I told you, there’s death and there’s problems and staying at home too. It’s not just, isn’t it wonderful to stay at home.”
Trump tweeted Friday morning,
California Gov. Gavin Newsom didn’t respond to Trump but tweeted Friday urging people to stay home.
“CA is flattening the curve — but we MUST continue to take this seriously. Stay home. Practice physical distancing.”
Huntington Beach police said in a statement,
“We are asking our community and those that visit Huntington Beach to remember we are under an Executive Order by the State, which specifically states all residents of California should stay at home in an effort to help flatten the curve in regard to community spread of COVID-19.
The more people are out and gathered in groups, the more COVID-19 will spread in our community and endanger lives.”
There were no arrests made.
Stupidity isn’t a crime in the United States. If so, these streets would be empty.
Earlier this week, protests also took place in Michigan, Kentucky, Minnesota, Virginia, Utah, North Carolina & Ohio.
…and Andy Borowitz nails it, once again.
