Conservative Christians like Pastor Rick Warren are fond of repeating the lie that no culture in the last 5,000 years has ever accepted homosexuality or same-sex marriages. The truth is there are actually several cultures throughout history that accommodated homosexuals and their unions. Several Native American tribes were known to be openly accepting of homosexuality before the arrival of Europeans and the subsequent enforcement of Christianity on native cultures. Many tribes considered homosexuality a sign of spiritual power and often many spiritual leaders, though not required to be homosexual, openly lived and dressed as women and engaged in same-sex unions. We’wha was a famous cross-dressing Lhamana (the Zuni term for the more modern Two-Spirit, a gay or mixed gender native person) who became a leader of his tribe and even traveled to Washington D.C. to meet President Grover Cleveland in 1886, although he was generally mistaken for a biological woman. One press release even referred to We’wha as a Zuni princess. It’s strange that a pastor like Rick Warren wouldn’t know about this portion of American history. After all, it was the brutal enforcement of Christianity that nearly caused native culture to be wiped off the face of the earth. You’d think they would remember stuff like that (left photo: Crow Two Spirits. Right Photo: We’wha, the Zuni Lhamana)
