Like many a Hollywood star before it, the iconic sign that looks out over Los Angeles will be undergoing a facial procedure. Starting today, workers will strip the old paint off the letters and pressure-wash the exposed corrugated metal before priming and repainting them white again. The back of the sign will also be scraped, sanded, and painted. (Ouch! we hear a hundred aging actors scream, remembering.) The eight-to-10-week process is expected to take 110 gallons of primer and 275 gallons of paint. The sign, which was erected in 1923 as “Hollywoodland,” has not been cleaned in 35 years. The undisclosed cost will be covered by the Hollywood Sign Trust and Sherwin-Williams. (via LATimes)
