I picked up a copy of Out magazine today, and there on the cover was a very nice picture of my old classmate and high school hero, John Barrowman. If you haven’t heard of him, wait a minute, you will. John is the star of the adult British sci-fi series Torchwood. He really is a great actor and he plays the part of a “sex-mad alien investigator” with conviction. John came out of the closet professionally in 2004, but he never seemed to be that in the closet from what I can remember. He was the star of my world, not to mention our high-school Thespian Guild, back when I attended Joliet West High school in Illinois.
The Out interview thankfully glosses over his early years and antics in Joliet, except that John does recall sneaking a peek at a few of the boys during some dirty-movie circle jerks at his house! I recall with fondness a few parties at John’s house, but I won’t go into detail about that. Besides, I was never really “in” to John in that way but, God knows, he (as well as fellow classmate Anthony Rapp, who went on to star in Rent) really inspired the hell out of me! After high school, I moved to NYC and jumped into the go-go boy/club scene of the early ’90s with full abandon. Those are the times I will never forget and always treasure. And I doubt I would have ever had the courage or inspiration to do it without the example of my old high school hero, John. So I’m pleased as punch to hear of his success. Congrats, John!
