Adam Perry from the London office has a firm grip on his clicker. But his grip on reality is a little less firm. Reality TV, that is. Here’s what passes for real in the UK.
THE ORIGINAL REALITY SERIES:
49 Up – “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man.” What started out as a simple documentary driven by this Jesuit saying has turned into the original and the ultimate reality series following the lives of a disparate group of British children. The original idea was to see what impact the rigidity of the British class system would have on the lives of these children and update it every seven years. Now, as director Michael Apted says, “it became less about a system and more about the drama of everyday lives.”
KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS:
No Sex Please, We’re Teenagers – Twelve teens aged 15-17 agree not have sex for a whole five months. A WHOLE FIVE MONTHS! No sex apparently builds self-confidence and self-esteem and can lead to the revelation that a meaningful relationship needn’t involve it.
Smarter Than Your Kids – Parents go back to school to sit the same exams their kids are taking.
CELEBRITIES DO THE DARNDEST THINGS:
Art School – On BBC2, celebrities prove they’re not quite as talentless as we may have thought. Here they spend two weeks in art school learning to draw, paint, and sculpt in preparation for an exhibition.
