On Good Morning America, George Stephanopoulos sat down with veteran Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman to discuss the Chaz Bono controversy on DWTS. “I’ll say a couple of things to parents,” he said. “One: You can use this as a teachable moment. Number two: Watching Chaz Bono dance is not going to make your child transgendered. But what it CAN do is possibly save your kids life, because if young transgendered kids – kids with gender identity issues have huge suicide rates – if they see one positive influence, one positive role model, this can save lives.” He went on to say: “One of the way hate groups have kept the LGBT civil right’s movement down is by keeping us invisible. Transgendered people are the last great frontier, and by seeing a human being, Chaz can change hearts and minds and really advance this discussion. Parents really have an opportunity here to enlighten their children and inspire them with hope instead of hate, and I hope they’ll turn that way.” Needless to say, he got a standing ovation in my living room.
