David Beckham has just signed a three-year contract to be the “global brand ambassador” for Motorola, which in less pretentious speak means spokesmodel. A person at Motorola says, “We’re delighted that he’ll be using his immense popularity to help promote (MOTO)RED.” The (MOTO)RED, when stripped of its parentheses and all-caps, is just a glorified cell phone in red, but it looks special when Beckham holds it against his black T-shirt, so he’s worth whatever they’re paying him. (A portion of customers’ phone bills will go into the Red fund, which helps eliminate AIDS in Africa.) The new gig will get Beckham more name-recognition around the world, especially in the US where it’s thought he would like to move.
