Harold Ford Jr, who consistently voted against gay rights when he was a congressman for Tennessee, has moved to New York and wants to challenge Kirsten Gillibrand for the senate seat she now holds. Ford announced that he now supports gay marriage on the Today show this morning and seems to suggest that he always has been supportive despite his own voting record. Ford previously voted against ENDA and for the federal marriage amendment against same-sex marriage. Interestingly enough, the New York Times wrote an editorial last week in which it was suggested that if the former congressman from a conservative southern state wanted to appeal to more liberal New Yorkers, he would need to change his stance on marriage equality.
