New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has just raised the marriage equality bar by announcing on Tuesday that New York will no longer recognize ANY marriage from a state that bans same-sex marriage. Cuomo said at a conference this week:
“We joined Connecticut and other municipalities banning official travel to Indiana. But, in that spirit, I can no longer ignore the basic inequality faced by gay and lesbian New Yorkers when they visit states like Texas and Ohio.”
A spokeswoman for the governor said the order will take place immediately. Former President George W. Bush responded to the news at an event at his presidential library:
“Laura and I have been together for 37 years, and the governor of Maine can’t take that away from us. New York —I meant New York.”
