A new exercise machine is creating excitations in the celebrity world. Fifteen minutes on the Power Plate is purported to be the equivalent of an hour’s tedious, sweaty workout in a gym. It’s been dubbed the Miracle Machine, obviously, and, like the Great American Novel, it had seemed a fantasy – no-sweat weight and calorie reduction? Are you kidding? Hop on the machine three times a week and in no time the vibrating platform should have you looking like Madonna, Donatella Versace, or a Manchester goalie, with only a stretch or a squat from you. Ladies have always known the genius of vibration as a means to an end, but it took Russian scientist Vladimir Nazarov to figure out vibration could be used to prevent astronauts’ muscles wasting away in space, and one thing led to a… product. A Power Plate machine, which contracts and relaxes the muscles 50 times a second, will set you back about $13,000 for the full-scale model, or about $5,000 for the smaller version. Or you might just sit on the washing machine during the spin cycle. Women have known about that, too.
