Who are the folks behind NOM? You may not be surprised to find that it’s pretty much the usual suspects. While NOM has been trying to deny that it is funded by the Mormon Church, the group Californians Against Hate have launched an on-line ad campaign to spread the word (Paul Revere style) throughout the marriage equality battle grounds of the Northeast that NOM is actually a front group for the LDS Church and that “The Mormons Are Coming.” The son of one of the 12 Apostles in the Mormon Church hierarchy has recently stepped down from NOM’s Board of Directors but another high profile Mormon, writer Orson Scott Card, recently joined the board. Card made waves last August in a Mormon Times article in which he called for the overthrow of the United States government over the issue of same-sex marriage! Then, last but not least, there is the group’s spokesperson former columnist Maggie Gallagher, who had her own ethics called into question when she was caught receiving taxpayers’ money to promote Bush administration “marriage initiatives” in 2003.
A motley crew if ever there was one.
