There’s a new Pit Crew member in town, and he’s got all the right moves!
Get ready to be gagged, squirrel friends–RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! just opened, and it’s already making Vegas herstory with insane dance numbers, an iconic cast, original music, and all the looks that will blow your mind.
AJ has it all: the personality, the drive, the killer dance moves, and all the tea about the show. We sat down with the newest Pit Crew member to talk about what skills he has gained from being on the big stage, his thoughts on the queens, what the fans should look forward to, and so much more.
Where are you from?
I’m from Los Angeles, born and raised.
When and how did your journey as a dancer begin?
My journey as a dancer started later than most. I grew up playing football, and that’s mainly where my life was headed. Then in high school during offseason, I started doing musicals and that’s how I learned that I’m good at choreography and I really enjoyed it, so I took my first official dance class toward the end of my junior/senior year. I started pursuing it professionally about two and half years ago.
How did you feel when you knew that you were going to be a part of the show?
Oh man, I couldn’t believe it at first! I was so excited and so grateful, but also very nervous. This is a huge project for the scale that it’s on, and it’s kind of my first really big project as a dancer, so I was just like, “finally! Here we are…this is it!”
What’s the best thing about being in Vegas?
The show, and that’s really all I need! But it’s good to see other shows and stuff too. The good thing about Vegas is that there’s always something to do.
What’s your favorite part about being in the show?
It’s the energy of everyone in the cast. I was a little nervous, I mean, I’ve worked with drag queens before, but I have heard from people who have done the Werq the World tour that it can get a little crazy with the queens, but honestly they’re so hardworking, so humble, and just ready to attack everything like [the dancers] are. It’s been a really good synergy happening and I love it.
What’s something you learned from being part of the show?
To roll with the punches more. Once I learn something and it’s set, that’s what my muscle memory is used to, and then obviously things are going to get changed and adjusted to be better and to be more efficient. So for me, it’s making the process of unlearning and relearning faster. It’s honestly such an important skill as a professional dancer, so I’m happy that I now have that.
Any notable or funny stories from rehearsals?
Um…none that I can actually share, but, never wear Payless wedges to rehearsal. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.
What is something the fans should look forward to in the production?
They haven’t seen the RuPaul brand like this before. It’s such an action-packed and talent-driven show, and I just don’t think they’ve ever seen anything like this–the queens that we have here and the brand in this type of platform–I think they’re absolutely going to love it.
Why should everyone come out and see RuPaul’s Drag Race Live?
Because if you want your edges to be slayed, then you need to come see the show!
