UPDATE: Apparently, Lady Gaga will NOT be playing the late English singer Cilla Black to ex-Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett‘s Dionne Warwick in Dionne, in a new biopic that was just announced at the Cannes Film Festival.
Her publicist issued a statement that,
“Lady Gaga is not attached and will not appear in the project. Reports of Gaga starring in the project are false.”
Gaga’s supposed casting made headlines, after Warwick held a press conference in Cannes today and told reporters that Gaga had committed to the film. Journalists were shown a promotional poster with Gaga’s name on it.
Nevertheless, Whitney Houston‘s cousin, Dionne Warwick, told those who attended a press conference at the Carlton Hotel, Cilla was “her nemesis.”
“She stole my songs. I was not a very camper about that.”
Danny Glover will play Warwick’s father, Mansel Warwick with Olympia Dukakis as Marlene Dietrich, who mentored Warwick. (Who knew?) The biopic spans the early days of Warwick’s career from 1962 to 1968, as she belted out would-be classics like Alfie and I Say a Little Prayer.
Warwick, 75, said she was pleased that Luckett was channeling her on the big screen.
“She just kind of morphed. Vocally, she was right. Her look was completely right.”
In 2013, Warwick made headlines when she declared bankruptcy with $10 million in tax debt. When asked if the project would help with her finances, Warwick remained mum.
Whoever ends up playing Cilla, it was a rivalry. Check out both Warwick and Black singing Dionne’s hit, Anyone Who Had a Heart.
