I’m so excited that my book-turned-movie Freak Show (starring BETTE MIDLER! LAVERNE COX! ABIGAIL BRESLIN! & MORE!) will be premiering TONIGHT at the NewFest in NYC, 7:00pm, at the SVA Theater (333 W 23rd Street). If you’re in town, you absolutely MUST be there!
Based on the award-winning cult novel by James St. James, FREAK SHOW tells the moving, heartbreaking and hilarious story of Billy Bloom, a boldly confident and eccentric teenager who faces intolerance and persecution at his ultra conservative high school, and decides to fight back on behalf of all the misunderstood freaks of the world.
Alex Lawther, Abigail Breslin, Laverne Cox, Ian Nelson, AnnaSophia Robb and Bette Midler are all absolutely brilliant in it. Alex Lawther, who plays the young drag queen Billy, is a once-in-generation find. So talented! And so adorable you just want to put him in your pocket and take him home! Ian Nelson, who plays the straight best friend/football hero is absolutely breathtaking – he’s just one of my favorite people ON THE PLANET.
Have I mentioned yet that it was directed by the ultra-fabulous Trudie Styler? She gave life to my text, and I just love her to bits for it. You’re going to be awestruck by her work, I promise, I promise.
I also have to give a big shoutout the indefatigable producers Bryan Rabin, Jeffrey Coulter, Maven Films, and Flower Films. God bless ’em all!
