WOW London has received lots of calls and emails from American readers. They were either whooping or sobbing, and it seemed to us that their response depended pretty much on whether the caller was from NY or LA (sobs), or states in between (whoops). There were a few exceptions what we at WOW call “The Piha Effect.”
But every American that I have spoken to has been keen to know what the response over here is. As ever, if you want to know the opinions of the masses, its best to turn to the tabloids. The right wing Sun newspaper (the UKs biggest seller) is jubilant, predicting a hard time ahead for terrorists, and pillorying John Kerry. Meanwhile, the left wing Daily Mirror is warning of more wars, environmental disaster, and problems at the British general election for Tony Blair. In short nothing different from the US press, left and right.
But what has amazed the Americans Ive spoken to is just how seriously the US election has been taken here. From the amount of news coverage, analysis, and water-cooler chat, youd think it was a British election. And in a funny way its even more than that the political parties in the UK are now so similar to each other that whoever wins an election here actually has very little effect on the day-to-day lives of most Brits.
But a US election this one more than any other will effect the lives of every one of us, all over the globe, starting right now. Its almost as if we should have been able to vote.
