
Gloria Vanderbilt, mother of journalist Anderson Cooper passed away today. She lived many lives in her 95 years, but her most lucrative role was that of fashion designer.
In 1976, Vanderbilt broke into the fashion biz in when she partnered with Mohan Murjani. While working at his blouse company, Murjani said,
‘Murjani’s, they’ve got all this denim fabric stored away in Hong Kong.’
So Glo said, ‘Why don’t we make jeans, a really great fit jean?‘ ”
Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans were an immediate hit, the success fueled by Vanderbilt acting as its spokesperson. But in 1979 she enlisted pop sensation Debbie Harry to make a commercial.
“When you know where you’re going you know what to wear!”
