I know, I know, you’re absolutely gutted right now about the Mueller Report‘s non-findings. You’re probably rather inconsolable, as am I. However, life goes on. To help you over that hump, here’s a jaw-dropping prune commercial – yes you read that right – made by satirist/PR whiz Stanley Freberg, featuring Sci-Fi icon Rad Bradbury. Picture it: It’s the 2001. People are traveling about in pneumatic tubes. Television is wall-to-wall. And most incredible of all? Sunset Pitted Prunes now come in tiny mini packs!
“Wait a minute!” screams Bradbury, appearing on the giant video screen. “I never mentioned anything about prunes in my stories!”
“Oh. You didn’t?” says the voice-over (Freberg).
“No. never. I’m sorry to be so candid….”
“No, they’re not candied.” (rim shot). “But pretty sweet all the same! The prune of tomorrow…. Available now!”
What an incredibly odd decade.
If you’re wondering just why the speculative fiction icon would appear in an ad for prunes, albeit a smart and funny one, it’s because his good friend, satirist Stan Freberg, worked on the campaign. “Bradbury reportedly refused to consider doing a commercial until Freberg told him, ‘I’m calling it Brave New Prune,’ prompting Bradbury to ask, ‘When do we start?'”
