Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist will star in Brokeback Mountain, a play with music based on the short story by Annie Proulx. The cowboy drama is best known through the 2005 film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.
Hedges will play Ennis (played by Ledger in the film) and Faist will play Jack. Hedges is probably best known for his Oscar-nominated role in Manchester by the Sea. Faist was Riff in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of West Side Story.
Via Soho Place:
Wyoming 1963: a wild landscape where people live in extreme rural poverty in tight, insular and conservative communities. When Ennis and Jack take jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain, all their certainties of life change forever as they flounder in unexpected emotional waters of increasing depth. Dan Gillespie Sells’ beautiful Country and Western songs weave heartbreakingly through this intense tale of an irresistible and hidden love spanning twenty years and its tragic consequences.
The world premiere stage adaptation will be the West End debuts for both actors and will premiere May 10 at Soho Place. The stage adaptation is written by Ashley Robinson, with songs by Dan Gillespie Sells and directed by Jonathan Butterell.
The project has Proulx’s blessing. She said:
“Brokeback Mountain has been recreated in several different forms, each with its own distinctive moods and impact. Ashley’s script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments.”
Tickets are available at the Soho Place website.
