The first trailer for Disney‘s Jungle Cruise, the latest cinematic incarnation of one of its iconic theme park rides, just dropped. It features an out-gay character in a supporting role.
Jungle Cruise follows explorer Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) who is searching for a fabled tree that offers the cure for a disease but to find the cure, she must journey upriver into the jungle, guided by the eccentric Captain Frank played by Dwayne Johnson. (Think Bogie & Hepburn in John Huston‘s The African Queen.)
Reports from the set have made a big deal about Lily’s younger brother McGregor (Jack Whitehall) being played as something of a campy gay man. An over-the-top stereotype, and to have it played by a straight actor have attracted controversy already, although you’ll barely see him in this trailer, –so no clues there.
Disney was also criticized for claiming the character Lefou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake was also gay, though nothing in the film identified him as such.
Jungle Cruise opens July 24, 2020.
