Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Fantasia Barrino.
It’s based on the musical stage play by Marsha Norman that won two 2016 Tony Awards—including Best Revival of a Musical.
The original (non-musical) film adaptation became an international hit. Whoopi Goldberg reflected on the amazing moment she got the leading role in the film:
It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theaters in North America on December 25, 2023 and internationally beginning 18 January 2024.
