“Last night I dreamt of Manderley again….”
So begins the Daphne Du Maurier book and original 1940 Alfred Hitchcock movie about a nervous young bride trying to fit in at the imposing family estate of her new husband. To make matters worse, she finds herself battling the shadow of his late first wife – the elegant and sophisticated Rebecca – whose haunting legacy is kept alive by the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers….
It’s all very dark and gloomy and oh-so-gothic, nothing like these cheery pictures from the new Netflix remake, but hey… I’m not here to judge.
Armie Hammer stars as urbane Maxim de Winter… Lily James is his (nameless) bride… and, most interestingly, Kristin Scott Thomas is playing the malevolent Mrs Danvers.
And while Armie is no Laurence Olivier, and Lily is never going to be Joan Fontaine… I’m actually pretty psyched to watch Kristen torment her new employer.
Coming to Netflix October 21

From the original…
And now the remake…
Not QUITE as effective… but who could possibly top Dame Judith Anderson‘s iconic portrayal …
Meh. Looks more Gatsby than Rebecca… but we shall see.
