Former drug addict/hustler-turned-literary sensation JT Leroy was all the rage among the hipster literati set for a brief moment in the early 2000s. That is, until he was unmasked as 40-year-old female former phone-sex operator named Laura Albert whose “exploits” about a sordid childhood mired by prostitution, abuse, and homelessness turned out to be completely made up. Now, a new documentary Author: The JT LeRoy Story chronicles the height of LeRoy’s fame at fashion events and rock shows – hobnobbing with a dizzying array of stars like Courtney Love, Debbie Harry, Shirley Manson, and more – to the New York Times unmasking Albert and exposing the tawdry true tale of the biggest literary hoax of our time. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Author: The JT LeRoy Story will be released in theaters on September 9th (via IndieWire)
