In covering all this amazing fan art, I’ve been able to stumble my way onto finding some of the coolest RuPaul’s Drag Race artwork. You’ve now seen photoshop paintings, crafty paper dolls and more! But how about an adorable mixture of Steven Universe and RuPaul’s queens?!
As we wait another month for RuPaul’s DragCon to take over New York City, we’ve decided to highlight another part of the RuPaul Fan Art family: FauxTeen! I just couldn’t believe my eyes when I found Austeen aka FauxTeen on Instagram! His illustrations are so refreshing and unique. Fauxteen has even created his own RuPaul’s Universe.
I got to speak to FauxTeen on all things Drag Race, why Violet Chachki is his favorite drag queen and why Steven Universe is a great blend for Drag Race!
Who are you and where are you from?
I am John Austeen Guinto Manalang, A Visual Artist from the Philippines.”
Who are some of your artistic influences?
I have a tons of artistic influences but If I have to name a few in the Visual Arts, Of course Chad Sell has always been my favorite, his illustrations specially from Drag Race are spot on and perfect. I also adore Kevin Wada, Jen Bartel, Loish, Jemma Salume, Michael Dimmota, Vaughn Pinpin, Ryan Monsod, John Ed De Vera and the amazing James Jean. Being a big fan of Rupaul’s Drag Race and Steven Universe. Why not combine the best of both worlds? Also I saw a post that Jinkx Monsoon always wanted to be a Crystal Gem so why not illustrate her as one with the other winners?”
What compels you to draw Drag Race fan art?
I make Drag Race fan art because Drag Queens are just simply awesome haha. For me they are like superheroes that can transform from a look to another. They are the modern heroes that makes our community a better place to be with. Drag Queens are empowering and innovative. My favorite season are Season 6 and Season 7. Season 6 because of the level of talent in the competition and 7 because, as a Visual Artist, it gave us the most iconic looks from the franchise.”
Who is your favorite drag queen and why?
If I have to choose my favorite queen, the top of my list would be Violet Chachki, because she is the representation of Visuals in Drag. But I also love Raja, Raven, and of course our current reigning and fellow Visual Artist Sasha Velour.”
Who would you love to see in All Stars 3?
The queens I’d love to see on All stars three would be Trixie Mattel, Nina Bo Nina Brown, April Carrión, Trinity K. Bonet, Milk, BenDeLaCreme, Max, Chi Chi DeVayne, Valentina and Shea Couleé.”
