Drag has the most incredible power: it brings people together, it’s art, and it’s glamour. There are numerous reasons why anyone would love drag and want to be a part of it. Reasons like this are why DragCon LA and DragCon NYC are so important. The capability of celebrating such a culture is amazing. What comes out of that celebration is just as important. In this case, it’s the fan art!
In today’s Fan Art Friday, we put the spotlight on Meghan aka DragCousins on Instagram! Her felt creations set her a part in the sea of fan art images. She creates dolls based on our beloved queens and has given them as gifts to the queens themselves!
I had the pleasure of talking to DragCousins about her artistic influences, DragCon, and why BenDeLaCreme is her favorite Drag Queen!
“My name is Meghan, and I am DragCousins on social media. I am from the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts.”
“My major artistic influences are the queens! In my dolls, I just try to stay as close to the incredible looks that the queens have conceptualized and created. I also have been influenced by felt dolls that I have seen on Etsy, especially the Disney Princess dolls.”
“No, unfortunately, it’s not! I am a full-time college student majoring in Psychology, and I work part-time in Human Resources. But, I am trying to turn my art into a job with my Etsy shop (DragCousins) where I sell my dolls.”
“I was first inspired to begin creating my dolls because I wanted to give my cousin, Katie (the other half of DragCousins), a drag-related Christmas present! I didn’t have much other experience in art or sewing, but I figured I would give it a try!I love bringing the queens to life in miniature form and making the looks as accurate as I can. Their looks are always so intricate and beautiful, so it can be a challenge figuring out how I will make each detail, but it is so fulfilling when I see the finished product. I also love being able to give back to the queens by bringing them dolls when I see them perform because they inspire me and bring me so much joy.”
“My favorite drag queen is BenDeLaCreme! When I first started watching Drag Race, I was facing some difficult times and her openness about her struggles with depression really helped me. Her humor is so intelligent, which I was able to see even more so outside Drag Race in her one-woman shows. Alaska, Trixie, Kim Chi, Shea Coulee, and Sasha Velour are some of my other favorite queens. I also came to love the underrated Sasha Belle through her Drag Race and Drunk Makeover shows on YouTube.”
“Yes! I will be attending Drag Con NY! I also attended DragCon LA this year! It was such an amazing experience to meet so many drag queens and see the drag community come together in one space, so I am excited that there is now a DragCon that is only a few hours away.”
