Marianne Faithfull, the beautiful, iconic girlfriend of Mick Jagger in the ’60s and a singer in her own right, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 59-year-old cancelled her world tour, which was to begin in October, to undergo treatment. Her publicist announced that the disease was discovered in its early stage, and Faithfull said, “I have absolute faith and confidence in my fantastic medical team and of course I will be well again, if not better than ever. Next year’s tour, I want to assure fans, will be one big celebration.” Faithfull’s first hit, 1964’s “As Tears Go By,” was written by Mick and Keith. In 1979, she had a huge club hit with “Why D’ya Do It?” off her Broken English album. Faithfull is one of our favorite famous persons (she was always collapsing from “exhaustion” at Heathrow during the ’60s, and was once arrested at a Stones party dressed only in a fur rug) and one of our fondest memories of New York nightlife is when we crawled over the deserted bar at Area to pour her an after-hours glass of water. Good times. (Telegraph)
