If the Japanese don’t make a movie about this, we’ll be surprised. Seems there’s been more than meets the eye (make that nose, lips, and chin) to that groundbreaking face-transplant surgery in France the other day. “Clinically, she’s excellent,” said the surgeon who performed the procedure. But psychologically she’s only “good enough.” Huh? Turns out the recipient lost the lower part of her face when the family dog bit it off attempting to revive her after she tried to OD on pills. And now it’s come to light (cue eerie theramin music) that the donor herself was a suicide.
Reports that the donor committed suicide raise questions about the recipient’s psychological future because, if true and the transplant is successful, it will mean that for the rest of her life she will see in the mirror the nose, mouth and chin of a woman who herself met a brutal end.
