Gen X & Z have some bad news for Millennials & Boomers who use the 😂 emoji: it’s lame af.
The internet-savvy generations are shading certain emojis now deemed TOTALLY UNCOOL.
The OUT list includes (but is not limited to):
- skinny jeans (Gen Z verdict: burn them)
- side parts (middle part, puhleeze)
- the laughing crying emoji 😂
One user asked on TikTok,
“What’s wrong with the laughing emoji?”
“It’s so off.”
One Gen Z commented elsewhere,
“As a 15 year old I say you should use that emoji bc [because] we sure aren’t going to.”
Walid Mohammed (21) told CNN,
“I use everything but the laughing emoji. I stopped using it a while back because I saw older people using it, like my mom, my older siblings and just older people in general.
For Gen Z, it’s like the same thing as having an Android.”
Ouch. (BTW: most Boomers prefer Apple products…)
(This just in: 🤣 is also so OUT for Gen Zers)
Emojitracker, a website that shows real-time emoji use on Twitter, says that “Face with Tears of Joy” (the official name) is currently the most-used emoji on Emojipedia‘s list of most-used on Twitter in 2020, while 😭 took the #2 spot.
Other popular alternatives to the laughing crying emoji:
- 💀 “I’m dead” or “I’m dying” (laughing)
- the 😭 emoji (“Loudly Crying Face”)
- just writing “LOL”
- “LMAO” (although personally, I find this the lamest)
This is my most overused emoji… 🙄
Here’s a generational (ageist) refresher from the Pew Research Center, in case you forget where you land.
