In a heartbreaking new parody video from What’s Trending, Elmo gets called into an office and is told he doesn’t have a job anymore because of President Trump’s proposed budget.
“Elmo, the Trump administration is getting all arts and education funding from the new Congressional budget,” the man says.
Poor Elmo is understandably upset.
“But Elmo’s rent just went up! Elmo been working at Sesame Street for 32 years,” he says. “Elmo hasn’t been unemployed since the ’80s!” Then he adds, sadly, “Elmo’s only real talent is being Elmo.”
Then he tearfully mentions the millions of children who tune into Sesame Street daily.
“But what about the kids?” he asks.
Watch below, and just try not to cry.

On the bright side, Sesame Street isn’t directly funded by CPB or PBS at this time, and it also has a contract with HBO. So for now, Elmo is probably safe. However, some children may no longer be able to watch the show as the cuts could force some PBS stations to shut down — especially in rural areas.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting received $445 million in federal funding in the last fiscal year, according to Refinery29, which accounts for a tiny portion of government spending and asks for just over $1 a year from taxpayers. To support PBS, go to to PBS’s support hub and make a donation, or contact your local representative and ask them to keep PBS funded here.
