AJ and the Queen writer Drew Droege tells how he got the gig writing for RuPaul, and reveals details about his hilarious new one-man show, Happy Birthday Doug.
Drew explained how he got to write the “Jackson” episode of AJ and the Queen that featured Latrice Royale. Via Brandon Voss at NewNowNext, Drew said:
Yeah, I came on as a consultant, sitting in the writers’ room two or three days a week, throwing out ideas with [show creators] Michael Patrick King and RuPaul. Halfway through the season, they offered me an episode to write on my own, which was the first time I’d done that. I was so happy I got to write for Latrice.
Happy Birthday Doug sees Drew playing a cavalcade of horrible gay birthday party guests at a wine bar. In his review, Michael Musto wrote that the “gay party from hell” felt like a “heavenly” documentary.
Speaking of birthdays, here’s Drew’s viral Chloë character talking about her birthday:
Happy Birthday Doug is presented by Michael Urie and directed by Tom DeTrinis, and it’s playing through March 29 at The Soho Playhouse in New York. Get your tickets today!
