Traian Basescu has defeated prime minister Adrian Nastase in the election for president of Romania. The victory gives hope to the Romanian gay community, says ukgaynews, since Basescu is one of the few politicians there to publicly support gay rights. Nastase the opposer, on the other hand, has said, “If people want me to prove to them that I have no homosexual inclinations, I will test all their wives and girlfriends.” He felt impelled to defend himself because, since the ’90s, he’s been nicknamed “Candy” because of his alleged inclination, which may or may not have been caught on videotape. Basescu’s campaign for tolerance toward gays spurred the repeal of Section 200 of Romanian law which dealt with sexual offenses and is leading the country on the path to preventing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. We hear the, um, wine is flowing in Transylvania.
