The beloved Donut Time complex in Hollywood, one of the settings for the recent film Tangerine, about Hollywood’s transgender prostitution scene, is facing the end of an era. The Los Angeles Business Journal reports that AvalonBay Communities has spent nearly $100 million to buy a large chunk of land at Santa Monica and Las Palmas, and will be turning the area into mixed-use residential and commercial properties. Construction seems to already have started, as I’ve discovered in the wee hours of the morning because I live very close by, and they plan to finish construction by 2018. The project will include demolishing two night clubs, Avalon and the historic Circus Disco. The exact lot that Donut Time is located on is not yet on the chopping block, but with the developer hoping that this new project is, “large enough… to be its own safe haven and even a catalyst for gentrification in the area,” I just hope our darling local donut shop can stay, even if it means being over run with hipsters.
