President Trump joins family and friends at the White House today for his brother’s funeral service. Robert Trump died last Friday. His body will be driven to the White House from New York for the private ceremony.
Interestingly, the last time a deceased body was brought to the White House was for the funeral services of President John F. Kennedy after he was assassinated in Dallas in November 1963.
And the last time that remains of a private citizen were brought to the White House for a funeral was in 1936 for Louis Howe, an adviser to President Franklin Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor.
All of which brings up a slew of ethical dilemmas – mainly, should the taxpayers pay for the funeral of the brother of a president? Is it even legal to use a Federal building for the services of someone who wasn’t a Federal worker? Will they be using White House security? And a motorcade, involving our Secret Service? And if, in fact, we ARE paying for it… as one person pointed out…. shouldn’t we at least get to know the cause of his death? (Trump has not released that information, leading many to suspect it was COVID-19 — which would be, you know, rather politically inconvenient).
Twitter weighs in….
Um, can trump do that? Is that legal? https://t.co/Av1ZxsP1yG— Molly Jong-Fast🏡 (@MollyJongFast) August 21, 2020
Who, besides me thinks this is totally inappropriate? While Robert Trump is the President's brother and I'm very sorry for his loss, there's something wrong with a funeral service in a federal government building for someone who was not a representative of the Federal Government!— [email protected] (@OBroad52) August 21, 2020
Am I crazy? Is this even legal? Why should we, the tax payers, pay for the orange idiot’s brother’s funeral? Ugh! https://t.co/QQEW2IMt1r— Ducks Can Resist Too 🌊🍑🐱🦆🏳️🌈💙#EqualityAct (@dhershiser) August 21, 2020
So ‘billionaire’ Trump can’t even pay for his own brothers funeral.— Stu Cameron (@stucam7771) August 17, 2020
Nothing says hypocritical conservatism like getting tax payers to fund family expenses…
I can see the Robert Trump WH funeral now. They're going to bury him in the Rose Garden, a casket made from repossessed USPS mail boxes, lined with Goya packaging labels. Everyone will stand for the national anthem as he's lowered into the grave by a crane from a Chevy Silverado.— J (@thayer_icob) August 17, 2020
Trump is using us as his piggy bank!— A4NY14 (@A4Ny14) August 21, 2020
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY *NOTHING* WHATSOEVER LEGAL ABOUT USING THE WHITE HOUSE (which belongs to the people, not any president) FOR THE FUNERAL OF A FAMILY MEMBER…
It's called Misuse of Position & Government Resources.https://t.co/JAYt0NwXao
Friends – If I as a tax payer have to foot the bill for this funeral, then I should know what Robert died of! Or just assume it was COVID-19 and the Orange Con will fight that like his grades & taxes. https://t.co/NR80co4gKo— The real John Feal (@JohnFeal1) August 21, 2020
