This week in music history Dolly Parton, the Spice Girls, Madonna, and Lady Gaga, and other fierce ladies topped the charts. Find out which of their hits went to number one!
On February 24, 1973 Roberta Flack hit number one with “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”
The iconic Dolly Parton went to number one on February 21, 1981 with her classic song “9 to 5” from the film of the same name. Fun fact: the song never charted at neither number 9 or number 5. :)
Expose‘s “Seasons Change” topped the charts on February 20, 1988. Although their first 7 singles went top 10, this was their only number one. This date is also notable because chart-topper Rihanna – who just surpassed Michael Jackson with her 30th top 10 hit “Love on the Brain” – was born!
Madonna – who has the most top 10 hits with 38 – had her longest running number one February 25, 1995 with “Take a Bow,” her second single from Bedtime Stories.
Another girl group, the Spice Girls, went to number one February 22, 1997 with their debut single “Wannabe.” Girl Power!
This song reminds me of college! I lived for Ashanti! She went to number one with Ja Rule on February 23, 2002 in “Always on Time.”
Lady Gaga‘s queer anthem “Born This Way” hit the top spot on February 26, 2011. It was also the Billboard Hot 100’s 1000th number one!
