Point Break Live!, the stage version of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 bomb, has hit the boards in Manhattan this month. The play – incredibly, ridiculously – features big-wave surfing, car chases, explosions, and two extended skydiving sequences. Whereas the Patrick Swayze role of bank-robbing zen-master Bodhi will be played by Gearick Matthies, Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Utah will be portrayed every night by an audience member picked at random to read his part off of cue cards. According to the press release from the production’s 2004 premiere at the Little Theatre in Seattle, having an amateur in the part “manages to capture the rawness of a Keanu Reeves performance even from those who generally think themselves incapable of acting.” Whoa!
