The mid-term elections were one of the most important in U.S. history, especially for the LGBTQ community. Equality advocates have been campaigning hard for the Democrats hoping for a big blue wave with a record number of LGBTQ politicians on the ballots. And the Democrats
TOOK BACK THE HOUSE!
We didn’t regain the Senate and lost in some hotly contest races in Texas, Georgia Florida but this is still a big blow to Trump and the GOP.
Last January, Equality California endorsed Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom for Governor of California and RuPaul & World of Wonder made the PSA below. Newsom famously stood for marriage equality in 2004 as Mayor of San Francisco when Bush tried to ban it. Last night he became the state’s Governor!
This coming January, Democrats will be able to block Republican legislation and will also hopefully make progress on the Equality Act bill, guaranteeing LGBTQ and women’s rights nationwide.
Jared Polis became the first openly gay man elected governor winning Colorado’s gubernatorial race and Sharice David became the first elected LGBTQ Native American winning Kansas’ 3rd congressional district.

Tammy Baldwin became the US’s first openly LGBTQ senator when she was first elected and she won her re-election bid in Wisconsin.
Oregon re-elected Democrat Kate Brown as Governor, the nation’s first openly bisexual governor. Angie Craig beat ousted Republican Jason Lewis in Minnesota becoming the first openly LGBTQ person elected to the Congress from Minnesota.
Massachusetts re-elected the U.S.’s first openly gay attorney general, Maura Healey and Chris Pappas will become New Hampshire’s first openly gay member of Congress.
Openly gay Sean Patrick Maloney won New York’s 18th congressional district election and LGBTQ candidates included Jennifer Webb, Nickie Antonio, Gina Ortiz Jones and Gabriel Acevero.
Massachusetts voted to keep protections in place for their transgender community which prohibits discrimination in areas of public accommodation on the basis of gender identity. 68% voted yes.
And Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, lost to Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr., who she refused a license to.
But maybe even more importantly, Dems will be able to launch investigations into the Trump administration and his business affairs.
