After months (YEARS!) of dithering and doubt, young Will Horton has thrown open the closet door with a drunken “TA-DAAA!” On yesterday’s Days of Our Lives, he kissed a guy, and he appeared to like it. That’s not shocking, of course. He’s the only person in town who didn’t know he was gay. For God’s sake, HIS GRANDMOTHER has been nudging him out of the closet, and still he’s remained oblivious. What’s SHOCKING is that it wasn’t his best friend Sonny on the receiving end of this tongue mashing, it was just some random guy at a party. Poor Sonny. Poor gentle Sonny with the gooey eyes and open heart, who’s always been there for Will. Grabbing some random muscle queen at a party seems like a slap in the face to his stalwart bud. But there you go. (Another shocking aspect to the story? Just how cruise-y Horton Square has become. Who knew it was such a hotbed of homo activity? I LOVE IT.)
Now, as happy as I am over these new developments, I do have a slight issue with how his coming out story is being handled. I get that Will has so much drama in his life right now that he hasn’t had time to process his being gay, and that’s why it all just sort of bubbled to the surface when he was drunk at a party. Who among us HASN’T drunkenly thrown ourselves at a handsome stranger? BUT. The writers are on a slippery slope here. “Being gay” as a form of acting out has negative connotations to it. And “being gay” is MOST CERTAINLY NOT a manifestation of frustration. If the Days writers are straight (or even if they aren’t), I suggest they talk to GLAAD or some other gay organization before continuing with this storyline, because while I lovelovelove what Chandler Massey is doing with the role, I’m tired of the self-loathing already (the character actually spit at his reflection in the mirror recently. REALLY? Not a good message to send to young gays, guys.)
Oh, and btw, the guy that Will is macking on? It’s Kris Kristofferson’s son, Jesse.
