We missed this comment from Pop Muse when it showed up after one of our posts on May 17, so, in the wake of the Chappelle controversy, we’ve plucked it from obscurity.
Warning: This is less of a story and more of an observation.
Me and my man were at Who’s On Third in West Hollywood eating breakfast very early in the morning, maybe 7am ’round 2 years ago. We were the only folks there. Then, Dave Chappelle rolls up in a Benz with this Italian guy who kinda looked like a handsome Vinnie Jones. They were wearing (almost) matching sweatsuits, looking groggy (the kind of groggy from just waking up, not from having been up all night). They were picking up an order (breakfast in bed by the looks of it), smiling at each other, looking over their shoulders, blah blah.
While they waited for their food, I fixated on the Italian guy, wondered if it was Dave’s trainer, his dealer, his stylist, his sobriety counselor??? They were handed their food, and while walking out, the Friend gave me a look, a “Hey fellow Gay, look at who I’m with. . .” kind of look.
Since then, every time I watch Chappelle do a gay joke, of which he does many, I’m reminded of this moment. I’m a fan of his show, and I know this story tells nothing substantial. But we have a long history of black comedians who can’t deal with their sexuality here in Hollywood. Just ask Eddie.
So, I hope Dave finds what he’s looking for in South Africa. . . or Ohio or West Hollywood.
