Hmmm. Not sure I can ever forgive Damon Lindelof for the last FIVE SEASONS of Lost, and I’m getting a little tired of these high-concept shows with quasi-religious overtones (Resurrection, Believe, etc), so it’s with some tepidation that I show you the teaser for Lindelof’s new series The Leftovers, premiering on HBO in June. Set in a world where two percent of the human population have suddenly vanished (perhaps, due to a biblical rapture), the rest of the people on the planet, “The Leftovers,” are left to deal with the aftermath. Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Friday Night Lights) directs the first episode, while the main cast includes Justin Theroux as a New York police chief and Liv Tyler as a woman who gets embroiled with an enigmatic cult. Will this finally make Justin Theroux a star? Doubtful. This looks preachy, shrill, and dreary. Still, HBO rarely misses the mark with it’s dramas, so I guess we need to at least give this a chance.
HBO is planning to premiere “The Leftovers” this summer, Sunday June 15.
