If you missed the 2020 BET Awards, the virtual event had an energy and urgency informed by recent protests against police brutality. One of the most memorable moments came when DaBaby and Roddy Ricch performed “Rockstar.”
The video immediately became a flashpoint, as fans ate it up, while critics said recreating George Floyd‘s death went too far. The Charlotte Observer quotes some representative fan responses.
The song ends with a sample of Zianna Oliphant‘s heartbreaking statement following the 2016 fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte (DaBaby’s home town).
We are Black people, and we shouldn’t have to feel like this. We shouldn’t have to protest because y’all are treating us wrong. We do this because we need to. It’s a shame our fathers and mothers are killed and we can’t even see them anymore.
