B&G Foods, the makers of Cream of Wheat, is conducting a “review” of the brand’s packaging, which prominently features a smiling black chef.
The move comes on the heels of Quaker Oats announcing that it’s getting rid of the name and image of their Aunt Jemima‘s brand products and Mars saying the company’s Uncle Ben’s Rice would be change its name too.
B&G Foods said in a statement, that it was
“initiating an immediate review of the Cream of Wheat brand packaging.
We understand there are concerns regarding the Chef image, and we are committed to evaluating our packaging and will proactively take steps to ensure that we and our brands do not inadvertently contribute to systemic racism.
B&G Foods unequivocally stands against prejudice and injustice of any kind.”
The WOW Report and others news outlets have posted theses stories and what has been concerning are the comments from whites complaining about Black Lives Matter protests and a reassessment of systemic racism running through the culture as “going too far.”
Just today I saw these comments on Mamie Van Doren‘s Facebook post about this Cream of Wheat news. Mamie is herself quite liberal and vocal about her disdain for Trumps and her approval of the recent protest, but many of her FB followers are older, white and quite vocal themselves. Below are some of their comments.
I know, I broke my own rule, “never read the comments”… but you can learn a lot about how clueless some folks are. You think people would say, “Oh, that IS offensive. Get rid of it Who needs it…?”
On a lighter note, The Onion gets into the game and comes up with their own solution with this headline & image:
“Quaker Oats Replaces Historically Racist Aunt Jemima Mascot with Black Female Lawyer Who Enjoys Pancakes Sometimes.”
